The short infantry fighting vehicle (SPz kurz, Hotchkiss) was part of the Bundeswehr's initial armament of armoured vehicles. The best-known version was the reconnaissance tank, which was used for light reconnaissance in squads of two vehicles.
Changing ammunition for the 20 mm gun was difficult due to the tight space conditions and the high belt weight; moreover, the change required the use of tools. The infantry fighting vehicle did not have an optical rangefinder.
