The Chieftain was a British main battle tank developed in the 1950s and first introduced to the public in 1961. At the time of its introduction, the Chieftain was one of the best-armed and best-armoured tanks in the world. However, the heavy armour resulted in limited mobility. A total of about 1800 units were produced. The tank was used in various armed conflicts, including the First and Second Gulf Wars.
After the Yom Kippur War, the Chieftain's armour had to be greatly improved to counter the threat of Soviet anti-tank guided missiles. The Stilbrew armour met this requirement without sacrificing mobility.
